How to Get Wine Delivered

Wine clubs make it easier than ever before for wine enthusiasts to get bottles shipped directly to their front door. Unfortunately, this may not be an option for everyone.

If you’ve ever tried independently purchasing wine online and not through an online wine club or delivery service, you’ve probably discovered that the laws and regulations can be surprisingly complicated. The reason? Direct-to-consumer (DTC) wine shipping is a fairly new process subject to a combination of local, state, and federal regulations.

Use the filter at the top of this page to browse states where DTC wine delivery is currently permitted. See what’s available, whether you’re interested in signing up yourself or gifting wine club delivery to a friend. Different states have their own regulations surrounding DTC wine shipping. In some cases, laws may vary from county to county or municipality. Always begin by checking regulations in your local area.

Once you’ve found a service that delivers to you, the rest is easy! Curate your custom taste profile and soon you’ll be sipping a freshly corked bottle from the comfort of your home.

Note: We’ve done our best to briefly explain the complicated legal issues and regulations surrounding wine shipments, but we’re not lawyers. We always suggest looking up specific laws in your area and consulting with the wine club(s) directly for any questions or concerns

Is Your State Missing from The List Above?

Where most states allow some form of direct alcohol shipping and/or delivery, there are a number that don’t. If you live in one of the following states, your current options for exploring new wines through online delivery services may be limited:

  • Arkansas, Delaware, and Rhode Island prohibit direct shipping of wine with very limited exceptions called “on-site exemptions.” You may be able to purchase select bottles for direct shipment to your home address if you visit a winery out of state, though laws vary.
  • Mississippi bans any supplier (including wine clubs and wineries) from shipping alcohol directly to residents. A special license is required for those looking to bring in wine from out of state.
  • Utah, with some exceptions, considers it a felony to bring alcoholic beverages of any kind in from out of state, including through USPS or any other courier service. Check with Utah's Department of Public Safety for specific details and more information.

What are Dry and Moist Counties?

In addition to state specific shipping restrictions, different counties and communities may have their own restrictions on wine delivery.

Dry counties are areas that completely ban the sale of all alcohol, whereas in wet counties the sale and purchase of alcohol is perfectly legal. Moist counties are a combination of both where designated areas are entirely alcohol-free and others can freely purchase alcohol, following certain limitations.

If you live in a dry or moist county that restricts alcohol delivery, you may be permitted to ship alcohol deliveries to a third-party address located outside of the dry zones. Always adhere to local regulations and inquire with your wine club for more information.

  • Can I ship wine myself? Unless you are a licensed distributor, the answer is no. The regulations on wine shipping say that if you show up to FedEx or UPS with a bottle of wine and without the proper license, it will not be shipped.
  • Can I ship wine to a friend? Yes! (Kind of). While you can’t ship any bottles directly, you can gift wine for delivery by purchasing certificate(s) to a wine club in their name.
  • Can I use USPS to ship wine? The USPS does not permit the shipment of wine, no matter the circumstance. This ban applies to individuals, wineries, online wine clubs, and even distributors.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Gifting a wine club subscription is an excellent and popular choice! When bottles are pre-selected by the wine club, you’ll likely be encouraged to take a brief tasting quiz. Knowing how to answer the questions can be difficult when the order is a gift. We suggest either checking directly with the gift recipient about their flavor preferences, filling out the quiz yourself if you’re confident you know their palette, or simply letting the wine club experts decide. No matter what route you take, your delivery is sure to delight.
Wine clubs aren’t just for the burgundy enthusiast anymore. These delivery services can be a convenient way to access hard-to-find bottles, taste flavors from faraway regions, support small vintners, grow independent collections, and more. The answer is up to you of course, but we think online wine clubs are an excellent choice.
Every wine club will vary in price per shipment and delivery fees. The companies featured on our website average about $16 per bottle + shipping. Additional fees will depend on the frequency and volume of your deliveries.
Wine clubs are often a greater value than traditional in-store purchasing. These companies can buy bottles in bulk and cut out the middlemen, effectively reducing the price per bottle so you pay less. What’s more, many clubs offer their members perks such as discounted bottles, free shipping, and seasonal gifts.
